The St. Augustine's Justice and Peace Group was formed in 1998 and its first task was to formulate the parish 'Covenant with the Poor'. This was adopted by the parish at an open meeting and subsequently signed by 190 parishioners. The J&P group sees it as an on-going task to monitor our progress as a parish in the implementation of the Covenant.

The J&P group aims to:

  • raise awareness about justice and peace issues in the parish
  • encourage a Christian charitable response to need, whether at home or abroad
  • provide a forum for local, Christian action to combat the abuse of human rights

The group consists of people from a diverse range of ages and backgrounds and meets every second tuesday of the month after the evening mass to assess current activities and plan future projects. These meetings are not exclusive and all are welcome.

The group reports regularly to the Pastoral Planning Group of the parish. This means it can respond quickly to local need and be well-coordinated with other parish activities. There are four J&P masses every year and a quarterly bulletin, Justice and Peace News, which appears in the parish newsletter.

The J&P Group always welcomes new members!
